History

The first written record of the settlement dates from the 11th century. It is a transcript of King Géza I’s deed of gift issued in 1070. The 13th century abounded in events: it was at that time that the Cuman people settled in the area, and the Mongols invaded. Under Ottoman rule the region became depopulated. In 1751, the notary Miklós Kárász from Szeged bought the area near Horgoš and populated it. In 1871, the village was elevated to the rank of town. In 1944, partisans slaughtered 60  Hungarians.
