History

The first written record of the settlement dates from 1019. It was then that King Stephen I donated the village to the Abbey of Zalavár. In the 18tth century, Mártély became property of Count Károlyi. Most of its newly settled residents were tobacco growers from Csanytelek. This type of occupation was abandoned by the mid 19th century, and, after 1860, the villagers typically did agricultural work and fishing. The settlement became administratively independent in 1950. It became fully independent in 1990.
