History

Röszke is an independent town since 1950. It was first mentioned in a charter from 1439 by the name of Rezke (Recke). In the 18^th century, Croatians, Serbian border guards, and tobacco growers settled in the area. In the mid 19^th century, at the same time that the tobacco monopoly was introduced, the farmers started growing peppers. The most famous Hungarian betyár (highwayman), Sándor Rózsa, was born here on July 16, 1813.
