History
Röszke is an independent town since 1950. It was first mentioned in a charter from 1439 by the name of Rezke (Recke). In the 18th century, Croatians, Serbian border guards, and tobacco growers settled in the area. In the mid 19th century, at the same time that the tobacco monopoly was introduced, the farmers started growing peppers. The most famous Hungarian betyár (highwayman), Sándor Rózsa, was born here on July 16, 1813.
