History

In 1411, in connection with border disputes, the settlement is mentioned as ‘Szentiván’ by the written documents of King Zsigmond. In 1781, the Chamber gave the Szőreg estate to Szeged as a pledge, and two years later, it was sold to the city. At this time, the Serbs who lived here moved to the northern hill and in their place settled in Hungarians from Szeged. Ószentiván was elevated to the rank of town in 1917. In 1955, the official name of the settlement was changed to Tiszasziget.
